Douglas, Stephen A., (Illinois). Politician from Illinois who was both a U.S. Representative and a U.S. Senator. He was the designer of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Douglas defeated Abraham Lincoln in the 1858 congressional election race and became famous for his debates with Lincoln. He was the Democratic nominee for President in the 1860 election losing to the Republican Abraham Lincoln.
